This excellent creative toy is a complete working model of an internal combustion engine. Comes complete with fan and fan belt, oil pan, dipstick, and many other details, but the main attraction is the four working pistons that are visible through the transparent engine casing. There are even flashing spark plugs. The whole engine is 8 inches high on the included stand and 8 inches long by 3.5 inches wide. The extensive instructions will teach you the difference between a camshaft and a crankshaft (among many other things)--and they include a detailed explanation of how a real internal combustion engine works. Screwdriver and battery pack (but not batteries) included. Warning: buy your kid this toy, and by next week he or she will be taking the car apart. (But look on the bright side: it's a great first step on the road to having a free mechanic in the house.) --Richard Farr

Review

The workings of the internal combustion engine are clear to see in this plastic working model. When it comes to assembly, quality molded parts and clear directions keep the frustration level low, but the "mechanic" in charge must pay very close attention to diagram details. Most children under the age of 10 will require some adult help. The reward for the family (or the class) is a battery driven display where the pistons pump, the crankshaft turns and the fan belt spins its fan beneath the clear plastic casing. A 1999 Silver Award Winner. Recommended for ages 8 and up. (Kay MacIntosh, Parents' Choice). -- From Parents' Choice
