Customer Reviews

This is a natural !Diva's Devine DelightsMy older granddaughter is a true southern belle and fashion plate. She also loves to collect stickers, paint and draw. The Smithsonian Invent Super Shoes Coloring Kit is perfect for her. It allows her to start from scratch with new shoes, or play with an existing pair. This product is pure fun. She will even decorate her little sister's shoes if I know her! I like it because it has many different components, but is also a springboard for developing her own ideas for other accessories. It makes a great gift and I rate it a five.jodie marino nachison 5So much fun! There is a little book that is awesomeSo much fun! There is a little book that is awesome! It walks you through the invention steps. Without the booklet I would have just told the kids to go forth and create. the structure teaches kids to be creative thinkers. I'm really impressed with this and can't wait to get some other kits. The drawback- you decorate a small show and can't really create a new pair of shoes in reality. It's cool to get the kids thinking about these types of things though! It kept us busy for over an hour, 5 year old girl and 7 year old boy. 5Fun for shoe-loving kids!I got this product for my granddaughter, who loves shoes. She was very excited when I brought it to her and she really enjoyed painting and coloring her "tiny-small" shoe! Her big brother got in on it too, and created astronaut boots. Both children were a little concerned that they couldn't make real shoes.Everyone loved that instruction book. It took the children through the steps of invention; think it, explore it, sketch it, create it, try it, tweak it, and sell it. There was one page for each step which guided the children through the process. The "explore it" page even had some information and examples of different types of shoes. My daughter really enjoyed taking the children through the process and she felt like it did a wonderful job of sparking their imagination and getting them to think critically. After that, the product lacked the ability to actually create what it encouraged the children to think up. My grandson wanted to make astronaut boots and my granddaughter wanted to make purple waterproof shoes. Both were examples in the booklet, but nothing was provided to create these shoes. The box contained paint, markers, a small paintbrush and sponge, and some stickers to decorate the shoes and shoe laces. So, if your child wants to actually invent shoes, you will need to find supplies not included in this box. My grandchildren are younger, so they were fine with simply painting and coloring the shoes. I think older children who actually come up with a creative idea and want to see it through may be disappointed by needing to go collect other materials and figure it out without any instructions or guide. For shoe-loving children, this is a fun activity that will keep them occupied for about an hour and help them think creatively! 4Great for artsy kids.I have a 13 year old aspiring artist and a 9 year old computer kid. The 13 year old had a great time putting together, designing and wearing her creations. My 9 year old didn't have the patience for it. After they were done, his sat on the table. My daughter had a good time doing hers and eventually gave some to her friends as gifts. She put the 'wings' on her own converse. The materials are quality. We had some left over, in case she wants to decorate her own pairs of shoes, which she fully intends to do. While this set was a hit with one, it didn't do anything for another. So know your audience! 4Shoe not includedAs others have pointed out, this is a fun imagining exercise. Basically, you come up with really cool shoe ideas using the small models of shoes provided: a shoe key chain and several shoe templates. There's also some accessories for a shoe that can be colored and laced on.But what you cannot do is make a shoe. Full stop -- no shoe guys. You are inventing shoes in your imagination, coloring in and creating some awesome designs and then...you can modify a used shoe, I guess. The problem is that kids don't really use up shoes so much as they outgrow them, so unless you're willing to let your child mess with a brand new shoe (that they may not like later) this set puts parents in an interesting conundrum: give the kids new shoes to play with or have them stick to the templates?Best option is probably to buy a cheap white shoe and let them decorate it. For obvious reasons that's not in the kit, but it's something for parents to be aware of before they give it as a gift. 4A Different Kind Of Toy That Encourages CreativityThis is really a different kind of "toy." Rather than focus on arts or construction or playtime this set focuses on creativity and the process of invention. This kit looks at the design of shoes and allows your kids to work on canvas material with fabric paint and other design elements. Everything you need is in the box which is great. You can make one shoe keychain and also create several shoe add ons that you can place on your own shoes. The kit proved to be a lot of fun and allowed for some great family play time. Considering the low price this is an excellent product 5Kids Dress Up Their Sneakers And Learn To Be InventorsWe've become fans of the Smilthsonian's Spark!Lab products. There are quite a few of them. Our goal in getting kids' gifts is to give them something to do -- something "craftsy" which will put their hands, minds and creativity in full gear. This "Invent Super Shoes" kit was a big hit! What kid does not want to color and dress up their sneakers? Let's be clear up front: the kit does not include shoes! How would that even work, when you consider that children wear all different sizes and styles? It is intended to 1) get kids to imagine what their redesigned sneaker would look like by making drawings and even models, and then 2) transform a pair of sneakers they have, or acquire, with some of the colors and elements provided. The kit provides a lot of parts and ideas to stir their imagination. Within short order, we had a 7 and 9 yr. old re-imagining what a sneaker could be, then transforming an actual "old" pair. This process consumed them for several hours, days in a row, and then they were excited to wear their designs out into the world. They're already enthusing about wearing their creations to school this fall. They did so well with the process, we've bought them a couple of (inexpensive) pairs of white standard sneakers so they can unleash their creativity. It's also easy to give them access to our "rag bag" of saved bits and pieces of fabric, and to add a pack of multicolored Sharpie permanent markers, so they can unleash their inner inventor. That said, the kit itself provides 130 design materials, including includes canvas shapes, shoe swatches for design, paint, stencils, reflective stickers, and a mini-shoe key chain. The idea is to get kids to overcome the challenges that come up when they need to come up with something whimsical, and yet, must be practical as well. There are steps the kit helps them work through so they first envision and then achieve their ideas. This is the same process used by real inventors, so it gives life lessons in the guise of having fun.The Smithsonian idea with the series of Spark!Lab kits is to give kids at home a similar hands-on experience as they would have if your family was able to visit the Museum of American History in Washington D.C.We think your kids will love it. If you're a relative or friend looking for something for a child, this would be a good choice.Recommended. 5Fun kitWe have a variety of kits from this company, and we have been pleased with them so far. This Super Shoes one is a lot of fun. It has different parts to it. For instance, they can decorate a mini shoe. It also has different things to allow the kids to decorate their own shoes. They can make their shoes look like Superhero shoes and more. It is easy to do and fun for the kids.I like that this is both a fun craft and produces something the kids can actually use. So many of the craft kits produce just a decorative item that isn't really useful. With this, the kids can attach the crafts to their shoes and enjoy them beyond just making the craft.I was pleased with the quality of the kit. Everything seemed well made. It has been that way with the other kits I have received from the company. The kids liked it and were able to do it with minimal help. I also think these sorts of things make great gifts. I would recommend it. 5Mostly ordinary suppliesAt first I thought this was akin to a temporary tattoo kit but it is a little more substantial than that. The stencils are paper and not very useful but the paints are permanent fabric paints and the markers are permanent fabric markers. Those are pretty much easily reproducible with Tempera in a much larger size and SharpiesWhat is unique about this kit are the canvas wings that can be put on into the shoe lacing. The wings are made of canvas and have one small grommet. There is also a white tennis shoe keyring that can be decorated. It is cute to put these things together and they would probably make a cute gift to decorate shoes. 3Coloring kit with no actual shoes...fun nonetheless! While this kit is marketed for kids 8+, our 4 year old craft-crazed child loved it even more than our 8 yr old! It is important to note that there are NO shoes in this box, (except for an infant sized shoe on a key chain). When I made this disclaimer to the kids, they asked if they could send in their designs somewhere to have them put on shoes and sent back (I guess because we had done a 'write your own book' type of thing last year and they thought it might be a similar project.) No...no real shoes are coming out of this project. It is, however a great creative outlet for kids who like to work on designs or daydream about designing things. Our 4 yr old wants to 'customize' nearly everything she can find, so being able to add some design pieces to her lace up shoes scratched that itch! While the kids were a bit deflated that there wasn't a way to get their designs on some real shoes, they were excited to see the fabric paint, stencils, swatches, stickers and other supplies! This ended up being a very fun project and providing them with wearable "wings" to add to their lace up shoes and an adorable keychain (that the kids both wanted...) to hang from a backpack. I decided to let each of them color one side of the micro-shoe and they are taking turns with it.Ultimately, this kit is great for walking kids through the design process and adding critical thinking to an artistic endeavor. It proved to be great fun for our kids, even if real shoes weren't involved! 4
